MacPractice makes practice management and clinical software solutions for doctors in various healthcare fields. They currently offer four different products: MacPractice MD, MacPractice DDS, MacPractice DC and MacPractice 20/20. All of their software is Mac OS X only, which is where a partnership with Aqua Connect comes in. By implementing the Aqua Connect Terminal Server (ACTS) software on their machines running MacPractice, they are able to expand the use of their product out to a much larger base of computer users that they would otherwise not be able to reach. With Aqua Connect, doctors can now bring the Mac platform to their practice in an affordable solution. It provides the interoperability between the Mac and Windows platform that is necessary in medical offices that have existing PC hardware.
If you install MacPractice on Apple hardware running ACTS software, you can use a PC to run a Mac OS X terminal session that can provide simultaneous access to local Windows applications and MacPractice. This will allow offices to be able to use a mix of Mac and non-Mac terminals with the software. The PC user can fully experience the best Mac applications for doctors’ offices from MacPractice and the latest operating system from Apple, all courtesy of Aqua Connect.
In addition to PCs, thin clients, smart phones and even other Macs can be used with ACTS to connect to the MacPractice software. While MacPractice can already run on Macs, ACTS provides an option to use older Mac hardware as clients, which otherwise may not be capable of running the newer operating systems. It enables you to have remote access to your server regardless of your client hardware. In the near future, Aqua Connect plans to support the Apple iPad for those practices who will be taking advantage of these devices.
Now it is possible to keep your existing non-Mac hardware and still move to MacPractice. It will help doctors who want to use Macs but have a lot of time and money already invested in other hardware. Now you won’t have to replace every PC or run Windows in a virtual machine to use expensive PC digital imaging solutions. This technology drives down the cost for all providers who cannot afford to upgrade to all Mac native solutions when moving over to MacPractice.
In addition to providing access to MacPractice from non-Mac hardware, Aqua Connect also benefits MacPractice users with certain remote access needs. In head to head comparisons, MacPractice customers have been able to achieve greater performance through an Aqua Connect user session for remote access than their normal VPN service. MacPractice users can utilize VNC or RDP to connect for a remote user session through the ACTS. This opens a multitude of possibilities for those practices or physicians with multiple offices or who are on the road and need to access their work remotely.
