FAQ: Product Information

Q. What is Aqua Connect Terminal Server?

A. Aqua Connect Terminal Server makes it possible for diverse workstations and compatible devices to function as thin clients of a Mac OS X Server running Mac OS X based programs.

Q. What types of hardware can I install Aqua Connect Terminal Server on?

A. We recommend that you install Aqua Connect Terminal Server on an Xserve or Mac Pro. It is also possible to load it on other Mac hardware (like a Mac Mini Server), but please keep in mind that the performance of the software will not be as robust as it would be on an Xserve or Mac Pro.

Q. What type of client hardware can be used?

A. Pretty much anything that can connect to the internet, like PCs, Macs, thin clients, iPads, tablets and smartphones.

Q. Can I use Aqua Connect Terminal Server with Client software instead of Server software?

A. Aqua Connect does not recommend running the software on hardware running Mac OS X Client.

Q. Can I use Aqua Connect Terminal Server on a Mac running Power PC?

A. Only if you are using our 2.0 version (Tiger Edition). Our 3.0 (or later) versions (Leopard/Snow Leopard Editions) do not work on Power PC machines.

Q. If I download Aqua Connect Terminal Server 3.0 (or later), can I use it on my machine running Mac OS X Tiger?

A. No. The two versions of Aqua Connect Terminal Server are designed to work on their specific platforms. Aqua Connect Terminal Server™ is not backwards compatible.

Q. Can Aqua Connect Terminal Server connect to LDAP/Open Directory?

A. Yes.

Q. Can I use local USB and printing?

A. While Aqua Connect Terminal Server does not currently have direct access available for USB, we do have a workaround to get it working. Please see our workarounds page for the solution. As long as the printer drivers are loaded on the server, it should be possible to print from a local printer.

A. Please see our Application Compatibility List.

Q. What display sizes are available for my clients?

A. You will get different behavior depending on the file system of the storage device: HFS and HFS+ without journaling: indeterminate results (won't work well); HFS+ with journaling: each user will be able to write to the file, but the latest write will overwrite the previous one (first user's write will get lost); UFS: first user to access file will cause the file to lock, each user thereafter will get read-only access to file.

Q. Where can I find Aqua Connect Terminal Server on my server?

A. For 3.0 (and later): After installation, ACTS adds its admin tool and uninstaller in a folder called Server in the Applications folder of your computer. For 2.0: ACTS adds only the admin tool in your System Preferences pane.

Q. How do I uninstall Aqua Connect Terminal Server?

A. If you are running any version of ACTS that is pre-3.0, you will need to use an uninstall script to uninstall the product. If you are running 3.0 (or later), you can use the graphical uninstaller that is located in the same folder with the admin tools.
