In 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has plans to implement the Energy Star rating system to computer servers. Along with implementing more energy efficient servers, replacing workstations with thin clients can greatly reduce energy consumption, environmental costs, support cost, and hardware costs. Thin-client shipments, estimates IDC, will increase 20 percent annually to reach 7.4 million worldwide by 2011.

Thin Clients use less energy since they usually do not require a hard drive and are built with processors that generate less heat, thus requiring less cooling. Less heat and no drive mean that thin clients have a longer product life as they do not have the #1 component that breaks in a PC.

Without hard drives crashing, IT can spend less time on desktop support or companies can simply go to a hosted support model and avoid hiring an in house resource as issues can be taken care of remotely on the thin client server. One of the tools that a hosted IT solution could use is shadowing the user to troubleshoot issues or provide training.

Thin clients cost less than half the price of a business grade desktop and are not tied to a specific operating system. Sun, Wyse, and HP all have solutions that can run Windows, Linux, UNIX, and Mac desktops, thus reducing hardware costs if a organiztion wants to switch from one platform to another or run multiple platforms. 

Going "Thin" facilitates going "Green" on many levels, by reducing energy consumption of desktops, reducing energy consumption, and reducing waste by reducing the upgrade cycle.
